Basal Ganglia

Researchers have begun to substantiate that PANDAS and PANS involve a misdirected immune autoimmune process that affects or weakens the Blood Brain Barrier.

PANDAS and PANS is an inflammatory process that irritates a region of the brain called the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia are a group of structures that are a important “switching station” in the deepest inner region of the brain. This are manages a variety of functions, such as:

  • Movement
  • Cognitive Perception
  • Habit
  • Executive, “logic based” thinking
  • Emotions
  • Edocrine System

The Basal Ganglia is a major switching station for reason, problem solving, task flexibiltity, sensory, motor and traffic control. A major input center of the basal ganglia is the Striatum. The striatum is one part of the brain where dopamine exerts an effect. Disturbances in the actions of dopamine are at the root of abnormalities of several brain disorders.(ref 1)

Amygdala–fear and fight or flight
Hypothalamus–parenting and attachment, sleep, endocrine (hormones)
Thalamus–disregulation of consciousness and sleep
